Burning a candle is a natural way to connect to something deeper. As a fire element, the flame represents the source of our creation and our inner light. It can be used to connect to our higher consciousness and heighten our spiritual awareness.
Whereas, the smell of scented candles stimulates our limbic system, the part of the brain that is home to our memory and emotions. Hormones like serotonin and dopamine can be produced to help regulate mood. Therefore, our emotional state is influenced by the relationship that exists between scents, memories, and emotions.
There is actually a proper way to take care of a candle. And there are ways to make them last longer. To enjoy the purest scent possible and ensure a long candle life for your scented candles, you only need to follow a few simple rules.
1. Try to choose candles made from natural wax - soy, beeswax, apricot, coconut, etc.
2. Make sure that the wick is made of natural material - cotton or wood. Often the wick of a candle has a metal base - it is important that it is not made of lead, but of zinc.
3. Don't blow out the candles! If you blow out the candle and then light it again, you will not feel the true aroma, it will be mixed with the smell of a smoldering wick. If your candle is in the candle jar, use its lid by simply closing the candle with it. If there is no cap, you can use a candle extinguisher.
4. Keep the wick trimmed to ¼” – trim before and after each burn – remove any wick trimmings before lighting. If you don’t trim the wick that will lead to the fact that the candle smokes, the coals fall into the wax and the candle no longer looks new. Also, when you light an untrimmed wick, you may smell smoke instead of your favorite scent. Of course, you can trim the wick with regular nail scissors, however, we advise you to get a special trimmer: it is very convenient, especially for candles that are in a jar or a glass.
5. Do not keep the candle lit for more than 3 hours! The wax will continue to melt, but the scent throw will no longer be that strong. This is due to the fact that candle fragrances cease to produce a strong aroma at a very high temperature. Let a candle completely cool before lighting again. A candle in a container takes about two hours to completely cool down. It’s much safer to trim the wick when the wax pool has hardened. A hot pool of melted wax can burn your fingers.
6. Keep the wax pool clear of any debris. Don’t mess up the candle pool with pieces of cut-off or charred wicks or used matches. Introducing debris into the wax will interfere with the chemistry of the candle and may cause it to burn unevenly. This could clog the wick and prevent it from drawing up the fragrance oil and diffusing the scent.
7. It is important to store the candle correctly so that dust does not collect on the surface of the wax and the candle always looks perfect. Cover the candle with a lid and it will always be like new!
