Burning Candles
Can you tell me why some candles seem to burn clean and some give off a black smoke?
In most cases it is because the candle is not being burned properly. Black smoke is usually the result of a wick that is too long being burned up in the flame. Wicks should be kept trimmed to 1/4". Sometimes drafts will cause the candle to burn unevenly, which will cause excess wick to be exposed to the flame. There are some cases where a poorly manufactured candle will cause black smoke, and here again it is the fault of the wick. The manufacturer may have chosen a wick that was too large for the candle.
